Understanding Safe, Scented Products

What It Means to Be Non-Toxic: Understanding Safe, Scented Products

in a world full of scented candles, perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products, it can be overwhelming to figure out what’s truly safe to use. With so many conflicting opinions about what is healthy and non-toxic, how do you know what to trust? We get it—it can feel like you’re bombarded with buzzwords like “safe,” “green,” and “natural,” without much explanation of what they really mean. And even worse, many companies claim their products are non-toxic, but when you dig deeper, the truth isn’t so clear.

At Wood Wyck Candles, we’re committed to helping you make informed choices about fragrance and products that you can enjoy without compromise. Let’s break down what it means to be non-toxic and why it’s so important for your health and the health of the people (and pets) you love.

The Overwhelm of Scented Products

The fragrance industry has done a poor job of educating consumers about what’s safe. When you walk down the aisle of your local store or scroll through your favorite online shop, you’ll find thousands of scented products. They all promise to make your home or body smell beautiful, but many of these products also contain chemicals that are harmful in the long term. As consumers, we’re often left to navigate a sea of conflicting information, which makes it easy to get overwhelmed or give up fragrance altogether.

But we believe it doesn’t have to be that way. You can enjoy lovely fragrances while being mindful of the ingredients used in those products. The key is understanding what’s really in your candles, lotions, perfumes, and other scented goods—and avoiding the harmful chemicals that can negatively impact your health.

How We Define “Non-Toxic”

At Wood Wyck Candles, we take a transparent and thoughtful approach to product safety. When we say our candles are non-toxic, we mean it. We never use harmful ingredients in our products because we believe you should feel good about the things you bring into your home. Our goal is for you to feel comfortable using our products around yourself, your loved ones, and your pets.

Here’s a closer look at some of the ingredients that we never use in our products:

1. No Phthalates

  • What Are They? Phthalates are synthetic chemicals used to enhance fragrance and improve absorption.
  • Where Are They Found? You’ll often find them in perfumes, candles, lotions, and household cleaners.
  • Common Names: DEP, DBP, DMP, DEHP.
  • Health Risks: Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption and potential reproductive health concerns. These chemicals can interfere with hormone function and have been found to affect fertility and development.

2. No Parabens

  • What Are They? Parabens are preservatives used in many cosmetics and personal care products to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Where Are They Found? Parabens are most found in skincare, haircare, and cosmetics.
  • Common Names: Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Benzoic Acid.
  • Health Risks: Parabens mimic estrogen in the body and can interfere with hormone balance. Studies suggest that they may contribute to hormone-related health issues, including breast cancer. That’s why we never use parabens in our candles or any other products.

3. No Carcinogens

  • What Are They? Carcinogens are substances that have been shown to cause cancer in living tissue.
  • Where Are They Found? Carcinogens can be found in tobacco smoke, asbestos, benzene (a common ingredient in paraffin wax candles), and other pollutants. But did you know that some synthetic fragrances can also contain carcinogenic compounds?
  • Common Names: Benzene, PAHs, Formaldehyde, BHA, BHT.
  • Health Risks: Long-term exposure to carcinogens can lead to cancer, making it crucial to avoid products that contain these harmful chemicals.

4. No Mutagens

  • What Are They? Mutagens are substances that can cause changes to the DNA of living organisms, leading to genetic mutations.
  • Where Are They Found? They can be found in certain preservatives, cleaners, and dyes used in various products.
  • Common Names: Benzene, nitrates, PAHs.
  • Health Risks: Mutagens can lead to genetic damage, making them dangerous to your health in the long run.

5. No Reproductive Toxins

We believe in creating products that are safe for everyone, including the most vulnerable: babies, children, and pregnant individuals. That means we avoid ingredients that have been linked to reproductive toxicity, ensuring that our products won’t negatively impact your hormonal or reproductive systems.
